Probably the first silver dollar to be minted sold for a record price

A rare silver coin known as the Flowing Hair Silver from 1794 after being sold for $7.85 million has become the most expensive coin sold till date. This coin is a silver dollar, and according to several experts might be the first silver dollar minted by the United States Mint. The previous owner of the precious coin Steven L. Contursi without divulging the exact figures said that he bought the coin for millions of dollars.

The man who happens to be the President of Rare Coin Wholesalers of Irvine, California has owned the coin since 2003, but now parted with it and sold it to the Cardinal Collection Educational Foundation of Sunnyvale, California. The coin has done several tours of the country. In fact it also has a custom wooden exhibit case, so that it can be seen properly. When it is not being displayed in cities around the country, the coin is exhibited at the American Numismatic Association’s ‘Edward C. Rochette Money Museum’ in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

It is believed that there are around 140 samples of such a coin left. However, since the coin seems to have received special handling over the years, evident by its pristine condition, experts suggest that it might be the first silver dollar struck.
