After introducing a limited edition pen to honour Bruce Lee, Italian pen manufacturer Montegrappa is paying tribute to two more personalities. The luxury pen-maker is introducing a companion luxury pen set in its ‘Icons’ segment to honour legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. The occasion is the 35th anniversary of the bout between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, a match that is widely regarded as one of Ali’s greatest.
Held in the Philippines on 1 October 1975, the Ali-Frazier showdown has gone down in boxing history. The match was held to decide the true Heavyweight Champion of the World – Ali or Frazier. The match was held after Ali’s famous refusal to join the army in Vietnam, which led to his being stripped of the Heavyweight Champion title.
Called “A Thrilla in Manila”, the limited edition set will be available in gold and silver versions. The fountain pen will represent Muhammad Ali while the ballpoint one will represent Frazier. The hand-engraved pens will also include a cartouche displaying silhouettes of the two legendary boxers. Boxing fans and collectors would also appreciate the inclusion of a first-hand account by Carlos “Sonny” Padilla, Jr. who refereed the historic match.
While 350 sets of the silver version will be produced, only 35 sets of the gold version will be available. Each gold set will also feature a photograph of the two boxers with the referee. All pen sets will also include a certificate of authenticity signed by Carlos “Sonny” Padilla, Jr. and by Montegrappa chairman Gianfranco Aquila. For boxing aficionados, this collectible cannot be missed.
