A new way to become a US citizen is though ‘Birth Tourism’. The Marmara Manhattan, A New York Hotel has invented this new hospitality niche which offers an exclusive package for expectant mothers that wish to give birth in the US. With that comes of course the additional bonus of the newborn child gaining US citizenship.
A part of the Turkish Hospitality chain, The Marmara Manhattan is a luxury residence located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and provides one-bedroom suite accommodation for $5,100 (excluding taxes) for a month. Additionally provided is airport transfer, baby cradle and a gift set for mothers.
Many are believed to eventually use this as a stepping stone for immigration of extended family in the US. So far 15 of these packages have been sold. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services have deemed this practice legal as long as the women can pay her medical bills.
Republican Gary Miller seems upset about the whole situation and feels that these children will be eligible for schools, food stamps and social programs and the American taxpayers will pay for it ultimately.
Levant Bas, Istanbul based operator for Gurib Tourism said that many people are doing this because they want their kids to get cheaper education and not deal with visa issues.
