China has become the focus of all the major global fashion houses and luxury brands. The economic slowdown had taken a toll on all the major brands with the sales dropping dramatically in the traditional luxury markets of America and Europe. In a way they were forced to shift their focus on China which was generating more and more demand for luxury and fashion because of the galloping economic growth. Beijing and Shanghai have been witnessing one event after the other from different groups and brands and a sense of fatigue was just creeping in when the stunning Red Ball thrown by Diane von Furstenberg of the DVF label opened the eyes of the Chinese participants to a whole new fashion as art world.
The bold bash on the outskirts of Shanghai happened on Thursday night and the concept was a pleasant surprise for the China’s glitterati. The location was a former pipe factory with a sprawling industrial compound. The compound has been transformed into the vast studio of Chinese artist Zhang Huan. There was graffiti on the walls. The brick walls and corrugated iron roof didn’t prepare you for the interiors that metamorphosed into a fantasy of Buddhas and delicately painted Chinese paper lanterns outlining the “DVF” logo. Laser pointers wielded manually was used to highlight everything.
The Hollywood celebrity Jessica Alba was in attendance, wearing an elegant black sheath. Hong Kong socialite Pearl Lam handed out fur wraps to her guests to keep them warm in the chill of a Shanghai night. There were Chinese beauties moving around in their red soled Louboutin heels. Christian Louboutin himself was around in a bright red jacket. He plans to open his first store in China this year. He already keeps the form of the Asian women’s feet while designing new shoes. Diane von Furstenberg was happy that the Red Ball instead of being just another fashion gathering in some hotel ballroom had turned out to be a celebration of East and West.
