Platinum football fetches $218,000 for charity

As the football season grips the whole world so does it grip the high end luxury and jewelry market. Harrods came out with crocodile skin football and Shimansky with diamond studded football to mark the football season. Even a perfume that smelled like stadium was introduced. The newest addition is the gorgeous three pound football made of pure platinum.

The ball created to celebrate the world cup was auctioned for charity and fetched $218,000. Quite interestingly South Africa the current host of football world cup this year, is also the largest producer of platinum.

This does not happen to be the first time that football was made out of a precious metal. In 1990 the football received a Midas touch at the world cup held in Italy where the ball was gifted to Baresi who was voted the best player of the year. A similar ball was made by Japan in 1998 world cup.

Who knows what the next football will look like. Since South Africa is also a large producer of diamond we can expect a diamond ball the next time. For now we can do with platinum.
