The days of frugal communist living in Russia are over. The freer economy in the country has led to the emergence of a new kind of Russian bourgeoisie that has very very deep pockets. They spend time in plush spots such as Monte Carlo, Courchevel, St Moritz etc. These Russians have now set eyes on yachts that have been a trophy of opulence for a long time for the Westerners.
Their numbers are increasing rapidly, and mind you, these are no ordinary yachts. These billionaires are splurging on some of the most expensive mega yachts that are there. Take for example Roman Abramovich, the man who owns the EPL club Chelsea, is the proud owner of a fleet of yachts, and one of them is priced at a mindblowing $300 million! Chris Weafer, an expert on the crème de la crème of Russia says that yachts have become a must have for all those who want to flaunt their wealth.
He went on to say, “But for many new owners of these expensive toys the enjoyment is more about ownership than actually taking it out on the water. Many of these yachts will simply stay moored to jetties on the Moscow River or on the side of one of the many lakes surrounding Moscow and St. Petersburg, where they will host parties rather than sail on the water.”
