Macedonia may sound exotic to you, but the ground reality is something totally different. The country is blessed with great tourist destinations and many attractive monumental sites and also is home to Alexander the Great. Unfortunately, when Macedonians travel abroad, they spend a bomb for there aren’t any budget airlines operating at the Skopje airport.
In fact, a person who would fly to Vienna would spend almost 400 Euros, whereas, in the neighbouring Sofia, one could get a return flight to Vienna for just about 70 Euros. This has led to the speculation that low budget airlines are avoiding Macedonia because the infrastructure is poor, and also because the local market is not all that great or big.
Considering how Macedonia is turning out to be a luxury destination for Western tourists, one might want to see more budget airlines so that travellers could afford to stay at the swanky hotels that dot the pristine countryside from where Alexander the Great set out to conquer the world. The good news is that a new terminal is being built at the airport, which might mean more flights to and from Skopje, the national capital.
