Journalists are important players in the field of high fashion. Their opinion carry a lot of weight and can make or mar the chances of a new couture collection. But that status has to be acquired through consistent hard work, comprehensive knowledge of the field and a fair and unbiased attitude. Nina García de Castellanos, commonly known as Nina Garcia is one of them. She is a Colombian fashion journalist and critic. She has held the post of Fashion Director at the Elle Magazine and now the Marie Claire magazine.
Her status in the fashion industry is further reinforced by the fact that she is currently judging the Lifetime reality television program Project Runway. Born to a wealthy importer in Colombia she did her schooling from Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She also holds a bachelor’s degree from Boston University. She later specialized in the field of fashion and attended Ecole Superieure de la Mode in Paris and also earned a bachelor’s degree in 1992 from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Her credentials were the basis on which Nina Garcia has been nominated in the Dolce Vita Experts category at the LuXplosion 2010.
Born in 1965, Nina began her career in the fashion industry in the early 1980s. Her first job was in the public relations department at Perry Ellis. She later moved to Mirabella to work as Assistant Stylist and Market Editor and finally moved to Elle where she became the Fashion Director in 2000. She spent 13 fruitful years at Elle, eight as Fashion Director and in 2008 shifted to Marie Claire as its Fashion Director. She is relied upon as a fashion authority and has participated in numerous television interviews. She also judged the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City in 2007.
