LuXplosion 2010: Bruce Poon Tip Nominated for The Travel Honchos Category

Bruce Poon Tip decided to start Gap Adventures, when he felt that there weren’t any companies that offered authentic travel experiences. The company started in 1990, and has come a long way since then. Gap Adventures now offers more than 1,000 small group experiences on all seven continents to more than 100,000 travellers per year. Bruce started this company with two credit cards as no bank was willing to give him any loan. I am sure those banks would be regretting their decision now. Thos who are seriously into their adventure sports would know that the company is undoubtedly one of the best in the business.

The company’s revenue is over $150 million and has offices all over the world. He is someone who believes in sustainable tourism and community development, for which he has been undertaking a lot of initiatives. He even founded the non-profit Planeterra Foundation in 2003, to achieve his ideas. Gap Adventures was awarded the 2009 World Savers Award by Condé Nast Traveler magazine, as well as the 2009 Travel + Leisure Global Vision Leadership Award for voluntourism for the company’s dedication to ethical business practices and sustainable tourism. He has also been awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year and Travel Personality of the Year by the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies and by the Awards of Merit, both of them twice. In addition to all this, he was also presented with the Global Traders Leadership award for excellence in exporting and international business. You can follow him on Twitter.
