The New York based, Avedon Foundation has announced the auction of a collection of photographs from the legendary photographer, Richard Avedon. This foundation has known to have the largest archive of photographs taken by Mr. Avedon and the auction has been planned to create an endowment to promote the work and legacy of this one of a kind photographer and portraitist. The auction is to be held on November 20th, 2010 at Christie’s in Paris and the main attraction at the auction will be the incredibly famous photograph entitled, “Dovima with Elephants.” This photograph is expected to fetch around $500,000 to $700,000 and the entire auction will feature more than 60 woks of Richard Avedon, with an estimated sales value of $6 million to $7 million.
Richard Avedon marked a glorious career in photography, that spanned for more than 60 years, with the death of the legendary photographer in the year 2004, at the age of 81, during an assignment for the New Yorker in Texas. Mr. Avedon is credited with the ushering in of the supermodel era, through his work with Jean Shrimpton, Veruschka and Twiggy, that revolutionized the fashion industry. To mark the success and genius of Richard Avedon, the Avedon Foundation was established in the year 2005, with a goal of supporting visual arts and photographic education, all the while keeping Mr. Avedon’s legacy alive. The auction would also be selling off a small vintage print of Marilyn Monroe, taken by Mr. Avedon in the year 1957. This print is expected to sell for $100,000 to $150,000.
