Café Grumpy, what an unusual name for a luxury coffee chain shop but expect grumpy expression on the faces of people who end up in the shop without being aware of the price. A cup of coffee here costs $12, nearly 5 times the usual cost of ubiquitous coffee at Starbucks or elsewhere in New York! Maybe brains behind the Café Grumpy wanted to create niche luxury coffee shop targeting the rich and true connoisseurs of coffee who would be willing to shell out extra bucks for that extra luxury factor or flavor.
According to the Vice President of Ninety Plus Coffee, the company which distributes special handpicked coffee beans grown in Ethiopia, the coffee at Café Grumpy has cacophony of nuances and flavors that one associates and expects from a glass of wine. Apparently there are flavours of apricot, pineapple, bergamot, kiwi and line with a dash of chocolate. This really sounds like high end designer signature coffee. Do check out the Cafe Grumpy website and interesting grumpy line of items they sell along with coffee.
It is really surprising that in the times of recession such high end chain coffee shop has opened doors and wants to sell fresh pricey grind at select locales in New York. What is more ironical is, the coffee beans are specially harvested and dried in a special way on raised African drying bed in Ethiopia, one of the poorest nations in the world. This cup of coffee will really weigh high on the conscience! Maybe one can spare extra bucks thinking that a tiny fraction of it will reach Ethiopia.
