One of the most renowned Hollywood actresses of all time, Elizabeth Taylor, made headlines last year, when her private jewelry collection fetched a mind blowing $115 million and went down as one of the biggest sales of the year 2011. Now, the famous auction house Christie’s is once again offering some of the most exquisite items form Ms. Taylor and this time the collection has been claimed from the actress’s private art collection which boasts of some of the most renowned paintings. The auction itself brought in as astounding $22 million from the sale of just three paintings while featuring renowned artists such as the likes of Vincent Van Gogh etc. The entire lot as composed of some 35 unique paintings that provided a never before witnessed insight into the Ms. Taylor’s affection towards art.
The star of this expensive art auction event was the widely acclaimed Vue de l’Asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-Rémy. This magnificent painting created by Van Gogh fetched a whopping $15.91 million and is said to have been purchased in the year 1963, by the father of the late actress. Among other stellar additions to the auction was the Portrait of Edgar Degas, going for $1.13 million, along with the Camille Pissarro scenery that claimed a mind numbing bid of $4.77 million. Elizabeth Taylor and her ex-husband Richard Burton together canvassed the luxury market to acquire and maintain one of the most exquisite art collections, to the point where their Bel Air residence took the shape of a virtual gallery. Ms. Taylor was always known for her innate love towards opulence, which was evident in her bespoke jewelry collection. Last year, at Christie’s auction the entire collection fetched more the $100 million dollars, where in the star of the auction proved to be a pearl necklace that fetched $11.8 million, along a with a diamond ring that went for $8.7 million, making the sale the world’s most expensive private collection of jewels auctioned.
