As the big British royal wedding nears, talk has begun to veer to what Kate Middleton be wearing on her big day. From her clothes to her shoes to her jewellery, everything will be under the scanner. Five top shoe designers were asked what the soon-to-be princess should wear on her feet as she walks down the aisle. And they came up with their own versions of what Kate should slip into on her big day.
Spanish designer Manolo Blahnik designed an ivory silk pump for the princess-to-be. The pump was to be covered with lilies of the valley and sea pearls. His reasoning was that the shoe would represent springtime when everything is new and fresh, a quality that befits Kate.
Meanwhile, Italian Rene Caovilla decided upon white satin sandals adorned with marabou feathers and multi-coloured Swarovski crystals. Magical was the theme here, and Caovilla’s “elegant, sexy and precious” sandals are designed for a princess.
Also using precious stones was designer Giuseppe Zanotti, who designed a black satin sandal which would have a sapphire centrepiece surrounded by diamonds. Zanotti was looking to blend the classic elements of Kate’s ring with a more contemporary, younger twist.
Georgina Goodman decided to go with a more traditional style. She designed an antique Welsh pump with Scottish seed pearls. The heel too was inspired by pearls. Goodman termed this a sort of “luxury recycling”, where she tried to merge the old with the new.
Finally, there was the single-soled silk pump by Cesare Casadei. This piece tried to emulate the femininity of a 2011 Audrey Hepburn which is how Casadei views Kate. The shoe is adorned with embroidery and clear crystals, creating “a waterfall of stones dancing down the foot”.
Certainly, there is no lack of takers for this royal do.
