Bibhu Mohapatra has made a place for himself amongst the popular and respected designers with his luxurious red-carpet ball gowns. His dresses have been able to strike a delicate balance between classic and modern. And within a short span of working independently Bibhu has secured an immensely loyal clientele. He says that his clients are really smart, educated and have a passion for fine clothes. Bibhu’s designs have a timelessness that makes them fashionable beyond any one season.
The 37 year old designer has always been loyal to haute couture standards and is proud of the fact that his clothes are designed to always be in style. He is a hands-on guy who tweaks every dress until it satisfies his critical eye. His dresses often have exquisite embroidery and his blend of color and texture is remarkable. His dresses have a much wider appeal to all ages and suit the thin and not so thin woman.
Bibhu grew up in India and was interested in clothing even as a child. Seeing his interest, his mother taught him how to use the sewing machine and he started cutting up saris to create interesting dresses for his sister. After a masters degree from Utah State University Bibhu did several internships in New York’s garment centre before becoming a design director at J. Mendel, a Paris-based family fur house with a boutique on New York’s Madison Avenue. In 2009, he set out on his own with a full collection of day and evening clothes.
