China is a geographically large country but that doesn’t stop it from making territorial claims that are resisted vehemently. They have not been able to convince the Taiwanese or the international community that Taiwan belongs to them. However they have taken over Hong Kong and Tibet successfully. Hong Kong was more of a technical issue that was sorted out quickly but Tibet is a highly charged emotional issue. China’s administrative control on Tibet is complete but they want to supplement it with increased flow of tourists into Tibet from mainland China.
China has big plans for the development of tourism in Tibet. They plan to invest 10 billion yuan or $1.5 billion in Tibet’s tourism infrastructure over a period of ten years. The idea is to promote tourism in Tibet at every level. For the high end luxury segment a new luxury train is being introduced that will run from Beijing to the Tibetan capital Lhasa. Luxury train rides can be found all over the world including India, Russia, UK and Japan. But China promises to make this ride really special which will commence sometime this year.
The train will seat only 108 passengers per trip. According to reports in Tibet Daily the cost of the ticket for the week long trip could go beyond $10,000. The train is expected to feature luxuries of very high standard. It will have rooms, onboard baths and meeting areas as well. April is the beginning of the vacation season and it will be best to make reservations in advance. The Tibet Airlines is also making plans to commence test flights to increase air connectivity to Lhasa.
